Welcome to the 2025-2026 School Year

Get ready for the new year with these key dates and times, school supply lists, and other information.

First Day of Classes

Our first day of classes is Tuesday, September 2, 2025. On this day, we will have a staggered entry as follows:

Grades 6/7 will arrive at 9:00 AM and go home at 12:00 PM. We ask that Grade 6 students go directly to the gymnasium where their teachers will greet them and help them find their homerooms. Parents of Grade 7 students will receive an email from their child’s homeroom teacher the evening before the first day of school, telling them which homeroom their child will be in, and which room their child should go to on the first day of school. Grade 7 students should arrive at 9:00 AM. and head directly to their new homeroom.

Parents—due to our large student population, we ask that you say goodbye to your child outside the school and do not accompany them into the school.  We will take it from there! You will have an opportunity to see the school and meet your child’s teachers at an upcoming ‘Meet the Teacher’ event.

Grade 6 and 7 students will be provided a lunch at 11:30 AM that has become a Tom Baines tradition: ‘The Walking Taco.’ Grade 6 and 7 students will be dismissed at 12:00 PM and must leave the school so that the Grade 8 and 9 students may arrive.

Parents of Grade 8 and 9 students will receive an email the evening before the first day of school, outlining their child’s homeroom and the room number they should go to on the first day of school.  Grade 8 and 9 students should arrive at 1:00 PM. and make their way immediately to their homerooms. Grade 8 and 9 students should have lunch prior to arriving at school and they will be dismissed at 3:30 PM.

*Please note: There will be no designated Calgary Transit bussing available at 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM. This means that Tom Baines Designated Calgary Transit Busses (#796 & #797) will be available in the morning to take the Grade 6 and 7 students to school but they will not be available at 12:00 PM for students to take home. They will not be available to bring the Grade 8 and 9 students to school at 1:00 PM but will be available at 3:30 PM for the trip home. The regular transit routes (#154 & #54) will be running on their regular schedule as per the Calgary Transit Website.

Wednesday, September 3 will be a normal day. Doors will open at 8:35 AM and students are expected to be in class at 8:50 AM. All students are dismissed at 3:30 PM.

Assigned Teachers / Homerooms

Please note that teachers put a lot of care and consideration into creating class lists.  Sometimes parents/students request class changes because they feel they do not know anyone in their class. We do not consider such changes—give it a couple of weeks for students to meet new people.  This is an exciting part of being part of a large and diverse middle school!  Each year, we mix up class lists and give students new experiences with different teachers. It is great exposure to multiple learning environments and helps to build community and resiliency.

School Supplies

Grade 6 Students

Grade 6 students pay an annual General Supply Fee. On the right hand side of this page there is a list of supplies that will be provided to students at the beginning of the year as well as items recommended for purchase that the fee does not cover. We would suggest students only bring a backpack and a water bottle on the first day as well as any special locker items they may want to organize on the first day

Grade 7-9 Students

Our teachers have put together a suggested list of supplies that students will need this school year. The list is located on this page to the right in red. We would suggest students only bring a backpack, water bottle, notepad and something to write with on the first day of school, as well as any special locker items they may want to organize on the first day. The teachers will guide them on what things they will need going forward.
