Hello Tom Baines Families,

We are almost at the end of our first semester, which means the school year is nearly half over. It’s been a busy five months of learning, belonging, field trips, athletics, clubs, homework, exams and fun. We are excited to see what the second semester will bring us.

Please read below for important information.

Important Dates:

January 27 – Last day of Semester 1

January 28 – First day of Semester 2 (comp classes change for Grades 7-9)

January 31 – Professional Learning Day – no school for students

February 13-14 – Teachers Convention – no school for students

February 17 – Family Day – school closed

February 18 – Grade 9 Vaccinations

February 20 – Lockdown #2 Practice

Complementary course changes – we are not changing complementary courses for students at this time. The majority of our courses are full and we were able to give most of the students their top choices. If there is a concern about a complementary course, students can reach out to Mrs. O’Leary to discuss.

Parking and traffic – we had Calgary Police come a few times last week to speak to parents about legal and appropriate parking in our lot. Since then we have noticed an improvement, with less parents parking in illegal spots in front of the school. We thank you for your focus on this and for making sure that we are keeping our students safe.

School Council – thank you to all of the parents who attended our meeting on Monday. It is a great opportunity to gather to discuss the events and needs of the school. Thank you so much for continuing to provide funding for learning opportunities and supplies for all students. Our next meeting is on February 24 at 7:00 pm in our Learning Commons. Please mark your calendars.

Social Media Parent Workshop – save the date of the evening Thursday, March 13! Paul Davis, a renowned expert on supporting families to navigate their teens’ social media use is coming to Tom Baines to present to parents. He is an expert in his field and provides critical information to parents about how to work with their teenagers around understanding the impact of social media use. A specific invitation with more details will be provided closer to the event.

Thank you all for your continues support. Tom Baines is a wonderful place to be.
