Hello Tom Baines Families,

We’ve had another great few weeks of learning and activities at Tom Baines. We successfully pulled off a cold and wet Terry Fox Run, but this opportunity allowed the students to get a small glimpse of how Terry Fox would have felt as he did his run.

We are excited to watch our athletes in cross-country, soccer and basketball and are looking forward to great seasons ahead. Go Boas! We continue to have busy weeks ahead. See below for important information.

Important Dates:

September 26 – Orange Shirt Day

September 27 – Professional Learning Day – No school for students

September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – School closed

School Council – thank you to all parents who attended our first school council meeting on Monday evening. Many were eager to volunteer and to be a part of our council so thank you! All roles were filled and are below. Our next council meeting is October 21 @ 7:00 pm in our Learning Commons. Please attend! There are always ways to be involved and volunteer.

Chair: Lan Fu

Vice-Chair: Kevin Fu

Secretary: Scott Livingstone

Treasurer: Jen Conley

Casino Chair: Margo Weber

Attendance – the biggest factor on student success in school is attendance. Absences due to illness or appointments are excused, all other reasons are unexcused. Please continue to do your best to have your students arrive to school on time. If students arrive late after going off campus, they lose that privilege. If students repeatedly arrive late to classes, they’ll be required to attend Homework Hotel to make up for missed learning time.

Traffic and Parking – we are working with our students to cross the parking lot and street responsibly. We ask parents to ensure they are driving safely as well. Parents are not permitted in the staff parking lot or to park near the garbage bins. Thank you for doing this. Crossing Guards are starting soon and will help reduce traffic at the cross walk. Thank you to our brave ten students who have taken on this responsibility!

Dropping off items – a reminder that if you’re bringing anything for your student during the day (binder, food, instrument, etc.) there is a table outside of the office for you to leave it on. You can put a sticky with their name on it and we’ll get it to them.

Technology Reminder – please have your child bring their own laptop to school if possible for their learning. We have amazing technology at the school, but a personal device provides more opportunities and consistent learning for the student. Our students are doing great with our ‘Away For The Day’ policy with their cell phones. Cell phones and headphones must stay in their locker during the school day.

Thank you all for your support. We are so proud to be a part of this community and to see the amazing things happening in the school and in the community.
