Terry Fox run - 2026 - Thursday, Sept. 24. 

The Terry Fox School Run is an important opportunity for our school community to come together and honour Terry’s courage, determination, and commitment to helping others. His Marathon of Hope continues to inspire Canadians and reminds us that one person can make a difference. 

By participating in the run, we help keep Terry’s legacy alive while supporting cancer research. Together, we can show that Terry’s message of hope, perseverance, and caring for others continues to live on in our school community. 

Our fundraising goal is for each student and staff member to bring a "Twoonie for Terry" or whatever amount your family can afford. Students should bring their donation to their Phys Ed teacher during the week of Sept 21- 24. 

We will be cooking hot dogs (beef, vegetarian, or halal) for the students to enjoy after the run. The cafeteria staff is preparing the hot dogs, so the cafeteria won't be open on that day. Please be sure to send snacks and/or lunch for your kids on that day.

Athletics Update 

Cross country has now had two of their runs where we have seen some amazing results from our athletes with some finishing top 10 in their category and many improving their results over the two races.  Good luck to our athletes as they participate in their final race at Confederation Park on Monday after school. 

Our soccer season began this week with our boys team playing two games.  The boys lost two close ones this week with both being at home at the Hamptons field with lots of great soccer being played by the boys.  Our girls played an away game on Tuesday showing great skill in a 7-0 victory against Sir John A McDonald school.  The boys and girls will carry on their schedule with the boys playing away games on Monday and Wednesday and the girls playing away on Tuesday and at home on Thursday.  Good luck to all of the athletes. 

For basketball we ran girls tryouts this week and have now made our teams.  Congratulations to all of the girls that made the teams.  The girls will have practices next week.  Next week our boys will have their tryouts with the senior boys running Monday after school until 5 pm and Tuesday morning at 7:15 am and the junior boys going on Wednesday after school until 5 pm and Thursday morning at 7:15. Good luck to all of the boys in their tryouts. 

Student Health Plans 

To help support the health, safety, and well-being of all students, families are asked to complete a Student Health Plan if their child has a medical condition that may affect their school day or if medication needs to be administered during the school day. The plan outlines important information about the student's health needs, medication requirements, potential side effects, emergency responses, communication procedures, and parent/guardian contact information. Student Health Plans are reviewed annually and should be updated whenever there is a change in a student's medical condition or treatment. Please complete and return the attached Student-Health-Plan.pdf as soon as possible if it applies to your child. If you need a printed copy of the form, please notify the school and we will have one sent home with your child.

Cell Phone Use at Tom Baines 

In alignment with Alberta’s cellphone policy, middle school students are required to keep personal mobile devices (PMDs) in their lockers throughout the school day. PMDs may not be used during class time, breaks, or between classes unless authorized by school administration. This expectation supports a focused learning environment and encourages positive social interaction and engagement in school activities. 

Please note that PMDs include phones, tablets, laptops (unless approved by the school), gaming devices, smart watches (unless kept in Schooltime Mode throughout the day), and Bluetooth-connected devices such as headphones and earbuds. 

Parent Council AGM | September 21 at 7:00 p.m. 

All parents and guardians are invited to attend the School Council Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the school. 

This is a great opportunity to learn more about School Council, connect with other families, and help shape opportunities that support our students and school community. 

Whether you are interested in a formal role or simply want to share your ideas, we encourage you to join us. We welcome new voices and perspectives and would love to see you there.

Volunteers 

The student experience at TBS is enriched by the many volunteers who support our school. Please visit this link to learn more about volunteering with the CBE. Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. 

As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the POPA requirements and acknowledge their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form. 

TBS Parent Council also maintains a list of potential volunteers. Once you have received CBE volunteer clearance, you can complete this form to provide your information directly to our volunteer coordinator and stay informed about volunteer opportunities throughout the year. 

If you require a paper copy of the Parent Council form, please let us know and we will send one home with your child.  

Yearbook Sales Live Now! 

Click here for the link to order your 2026-2027 yearbook. The 'back to school' special is on until October 23rd ($38 instead of $42). The final day to order the yearbook is February 26, 2027.  The yearbooks will be delivered on the last day of school (June 2027). 

Dress for the Weather Daily! 

As we move into the fall season, please help ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Students go outside for recess every day unless the temperature is minus 20°C or colder (including wind chill). Classes may also be outdoors for Physical Education and Outdoor Education and other learning activities throughout the year. 

Words of wisdom from Mr. Wishart, who spent part of his summer in Norway: "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." A warm, waterproof jacket, appropriate footwear, and layers can make all the difference in helping students stay comfortable, active, and ready to learn outdoors.
